A blizzard and subfreezing temperatures could not stop the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce as they hosted the 3rd Annual Media Networking Breakfast at the Melville Marriott. Among those attending were a number of Long Island’s distinguished media professionals, who reviewed top news events of 2008, and predicted important stories to come in 2009. The program was moderated by Robert Hoell (WPIX).  Panelists included Greg Cergol (WNBC-TV), Joye Brown (Newsday), Frank Eltman (Associated Press), Scott Feldman (News 12), Peter Sloggatt (The Long Islander), Vic Latino (La Fiesta), David Winzelberg (Long Island Business News), Mike Martino (Long Island Press), and Carl Corry (News 12 Interactive).

Hoell led the discussion, focusing on topics that included: the ethics of the 2008 Presidential Election coverage, economic hardships affecting Long Islanders, environmental issues, the most important stories of 2008 and the most under reported news of 2008, how the media has changed in the past year, and the advent of Social Networking and what it means for the future of Long Island businesses. After an in depth discussion, the Panelists fielded a number of questions from the audience.

“We had an incredible turn out,” said Jim Kelly, Chairman of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce Member. “The panelists were great and touched upon several issues that are not only affecting all Long Islanders but, millions of Americans. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the public to interact directly with the press and we’re proud this event has become such a time honored tradition.”
A special appearance was made by Lt Lou Delli-Pizzi, of Long Island’s Famed Fighting 69th headquartered in Huntington who just returned from Afghanistan.  Delli-Pizzi received a hero’s welcome from the crowd. Also at the breakfast was PS2 Christopher Delaney, PSU 301, US Coast Guard Reserves. Delaney officially announced that he will run the Long Island Marathon in full army gear in memory of best friend and fallen soldier PFC Joseph Dwyer.  Another exciting highlight was the presentation by Bonnie Grube, Non-Foods Merchandiser, Northeast Division of the 7-Eleven Corporation.  7-Eleven will be sending our troops overseas a “Taste From Home” by donating several hundred cases of 7-Eleven brand coffee.
The program overall is an informative and exciting event which continues to be a Long Island tradition.
