Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day,
Sponsored by the Vanderbilt, Spa Adriana and Huntington Chamber of Commerce
HUNTINGTON, NY and CENTERPORT, NY – March 25, 2010 – Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day with the kids, the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, Spa Adriana and the Huntington Chamber of Commerce announce the first-annual Earth Month Coloring Book Contest and Family Day.
“Getting children actively involved in protecting the world we live in is so critically important. Environmentalism is a key focus for the Vanderbilt Museum, from our natural history exhibits, including the Marine Museum, Habitat Hall dioramas and whale shark and the preservation of the mansion and grounds, to the Vanderbilt Planetarium, which underscores the wonder of space and nature,” said Carol Ghiorsi Hart, Executive Director, Vanderbilt Museum. “We are proud to be working with Spa Adriana, an environmental leader and community advocate, and the Huntington Chamber of Commerce, in this effort.”
Beginning April 5, coloring books will be available for download from the Vanderbilt Museum (www.vanderbiltmuseum.org), Spa Adriana (www.spaadriana.com) and Huntington Chamber of Commerce (www.huntingtonchamber.com) Websites. They will also be available on the Ceviche Tours Website (www.cevichetours.com). Sister company to Spa Adriana, Ceviche Tours provides sustainable ecotourism and travel services to the Yucatan and Isla Mujeres, Mexico.
The coloring books will feature original drawings by:
- Long Island artist Mary Jane McCartney, designing pages that depict the wonders of the Vanderbilt Planetarium
- Environmental leader Amigos de Isla Contoy A.C., designing pages showcasing whale sharks, marine life and underwater habitats
Additional pages will feature the natural beauty of Long Island’s North Shore and the wonderful history and architecture of the Vanderbilt Museum.
The Coloring Book Contest is open to children ages 3-14. Participants can download the Coloring Book pages of their choice and color or decorate to match their unique vision. Additionally, kids can participate by making a poster to compete in a separate “freeform” category.
One winner will be chosen from each of the following age groups: 3-6, 7-10, 11-14, and then one winner will be named for the freeform poster category.
Winners will be announced April 24, 2010 -- in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day -- at the Vanderbilt Museum, during a special Family Day celebration. Hands-on touch tables of natural history specimens, planetarium shows, and special arts and crafts workshops will be available throughout the day. Admission to the grounds and museum exhibits is free to all contest entrants and their families (entrants must bring their coloring book to Family Day for free admission). There will be a small fee for planetarium shows and mansion tours.
Winners will receive a one-year Family membership to the Vanderbilt. Membership includes unlimited free admission to grounds, mansion tours and planetarium shows, a subscription to the Vanderbilt’s newsletter as well as seasonal events brochures, a 10% discount at the Museum gift shop, discounts on lectures, workshops, concerts and special events, and invitations to members’ only events and lectures.

About the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum
The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum—a unique combination of mansion, marine and natural history museum, planetarium and park—is dedicated to the education and enjoyment of the people of Long Island and beyond.
This mission shall be achieved through the thoughtful preservation, interpretation, and enhancement of the Eagle’s Nest estate as an informal educational facility. Exhibition and program themes focus upon Long Island’s Gold Coast Era and build upon William K. Vanderbilt II’s desire that his marine, natural history, and ethnographic collections promote appreciation and understanding of the marvelous diversity of life, other cultures and scientific knowledge.
