East Meadow, May 1 – For the past seven years on a weekly basis, fifteen (15) attorneys and staff from the East Meadow law firm, Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP, have traded in their power lunches to spend an hour with third and fourth graders at Walnut Elementary School in Uniondale. The program is called “LIKE,” which stands for Lawyers Involved in Kids’ Education, and it is affiliated with the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island. Fred Skolnik, a partner in the Corporate/Securities Practice Group, even created word games for the students to help them with the New York State Education Language Arts (“ELA”) standard examination and to improve their analytical skills.
But now the mentors of the LIKE program have something different planned for their mentees. About 15 of the students, together with many of the mentors and their family members, are scheduled to take a field trip to the Sweet Hills Riding Center, located in the West Hills County Park on Sweet Hollow Road in Huntington, on Saturday, May 14th. The students will take a bus from the school and arrive at approximately 10:00 a.m. They will learn about horses, how to care for them, and be taken on a guided trail ride. They will also have the opportunity to watch Steven Kuperschmid, an avid equestrian and partner in the Corporate/Securities Practice Group at Certilman Balin, demonstrate his horse’s jumping skills. They will be back at the school by approximately 2:00 p.m.
Walnut Elementary School in Uniondale has been recognized as one of the National Schools of Character, and the school credits their involvement in the LIKE program as one of the reasons for its success.
