DATE OF EVENT: Saturday, August 20, 12 – 4 PM (Rain or shine)
EVENT LOCATION: WALT WHITMAN BIRTHPLACE
246 Old Walt Whitman Road
Huntington, NY 11743
Walt Whitman Birthplace and the Kiwanis Club of Huntington have joined forces to host their fourth annual BBQ Fun-raiser and Old-Time Carnival at Walt Whitman Birthplace. This day of unique old-time fun family will feature a full barbecue including steaks, chicken, corn and burgers provided by Outback Steakhouse and a cash bar at “Walt’s Pub” which will supply good spirits to cool the summer day. There will be continuous live music provided by both Stuart Markus, who performs sea chanties, and a contra dance group with a caller who promises to gently teach easy steps and keep folks up and dancing.
The beautiful setting of historic Walt Whitman Birthplace will allow families live their history by playing old-time games on the Great Lawn, enjoying Whitman house tours and trying their hand at crafts like wood working, corn husk doll and broom making. There will be an old-time baseball demonstration and a re-creation of a Union Civil War camp along with a presentation by WWBA curator Richard Ryan about Whitman and other Long Islanders during the war.
Costumed storyteller Janet Demarest will tell tales of Long Island long ago and encourage audience participation. Whitman personator Darrel Blaine Ford will mingle with the crowd and bring Walt to life. There will also be a bouncy castle, face painting, raffles and a Chinese auction.
WWBA and Kiwanis will honor Councilwoman Susan Berland for her long-standing work for local veterans. WWBA, Kiwanis volunteers will be on hand to help the day run smoothly.
Admission for the event is $12 for adults, $8 for children ages 6-12. Children under 5 come for free. All proceeds from the event will benefit the children of Huntington through the Walt Whitman Birthplace’s school and literacy programs and the Kiwanis Club programs of Kiwanis Summer Kamp, Sears Christmas Shopping Tour and the Thanksgiving Basket Program.
